Servers are built around a simple assumption: everything fails. The only question is when.

A power supply will eventually die. A hard drive will corrupt. A memory module will malfunction. A fan will seize. Server hardware doesn't try to prevent these failures—it assumes they're inevitable and designs around them. Every major component is redundant, hot-swappable, or both. The goal isn't to build hardware that never fails. It's to build hardware that keeps running when failures happen.

This philosophy explains every difference between server and desktop hardware.

Processors: Throughput Over Speed
